Oct. 18th, 2006 11:52 pmI'm starting to get annoyed at how TV networks haven't figured out what to do with 16:9 HD source material on their 4:3 SD feeds. Tried watching an episode of SNL on Global a couple of weeks ago, and the frame was cut off at both ends, so the chyron/graphics/etc were cut off frequently. Nothing like seeing only half the graphic above the anchor on Weekend Update. Just now I was watching CFTO news, and there were interviews with the Leafs in the dressing room, and they went the other way. Everyone's head look squished, because they crammed the full 16:9 frame into the 4:3 rather than letterboxing it. Look, it's an interview with a Leaf, if you want to pan and scan it with some thought and proper graphics, that's okay by me. If you want to switch to letterbox for 30 sec, that's okay. Don't distort it or leave stuff outside my screen just because I don't feel like buying a new TV.
