So I picked up one of those C-64 DTV 30-in-1 joysticks at a KB Toys in NJ for $15 USD, which was half off. So not only do I now get the fun of playing a pile of old Epyx games along with some others, but it turns out the thing is built for hacking. Right now it's doing one of those 10 PRINT "Blah" 20 GOTO 10 loops on my TV which I was able to do by getting into a BASIC prompt, then entering the program using an on-screen keyboard. If I really feel adventurous, there's pads on the board for adding a standard keyboard connector, as well as a C-64 disk drive connector. Adding a second joystick port is a bit more of a pain, as you apparently need to wire a switch into the keyboard to behave as the up joystick. But mostly, I'm all giddy to finally have a C64 and to play old favorites.
