The backstory is that Nokia, the phone company, just introduced a gaming device called the N-Gage.
Being a phone company, Nokia figured they'd better make their gaming device work as a phone too, but the thing is, there are all these little buttons where the mic and speaker would normally go, and holding it up to your face would get gross face slime all over the screen. Nokia solved this problem by putting the mic and speaker on the edge of the device, meaning that to use it as a phone, you need to hold it like this:

This site probably appeared about thirty seconds after someone figured out that you have to hold the N-Gage like that, and the rest is history.
